Abstract

School archives are the object of deep concern regarding the safety and preservation of their documents, which are fundamental to the history of the school and construction of the educational memory. Their importance is increasingly acknowledged, inspiring reflection about their preservation, installation conditions, the correct organisation of documents and access to the information they contain. School archives are the repository of the information sources directly related to the functioning of educational institutions, and this makes them all the more important in the new paths of research in education, that place these institutions at the centre of the stage in order to understand educational phenomena and the socialisation processes of the younger generations. In this paper we intend to reflect about: the role of school archives in educational institutions; documents, their nature and potential for research in education; school archives from an interdisciplinary point of view; archives, the school culture and the construction of the educational memory.
