Abstract

The historiography of pedagogical ideas presents Denis Diderot (1713-1784) as a thinker who struggles for scientific education, in opposition to literary education, as the basis of public instruction. In the Plan of  an University, written by Diderot in an answer to the empress Catherine of Russia, mathematical knowledge plays a very important role. In this article, we discuss some of Diderot’s ideas about mathematical education and try to emphasize the connections between those ideas and the author’s political thinking.
