Abstract

This article situates and analyzes a set of guidelines for the
provision of school materials in order to identify a material
design for elementary schools in Brazil and Portugal in an
important period of their organization, the late 19 and early
20 th centuries. The source of this research were pedagogical
manuals - understood to be promoters of pedagogical ideas - used
at teacher training schools in Brazil and Portugal. In theoretical
terms, the work is supported by discussions about the material
culture of schools and the circulation of pedagogic knowledge.
This study hopes to contribute to studies in the field, particularly
to those concerning school material culture and the circulation
of pedagogical ideas, in this case, through the “circulation of
school objects.”
