Abstract

This article analyzes the report produced by Estevão de Oliveira – educational supervisor in Minas Gerais – as a result of the journey undertaken in 1902 to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The purpose was to outline the public primary and normal teaching reform in Minas Gerais. In this trip, Estevão visited some schools and observed the educational models and the pedagogical methods adopted there, reflecting, by comparison, about the stage of education in Minas Gerais, constantly showing how behind it was in relation to the visited states. By means of comparative exercise, Estevão built the other and himself (in this case, Minas Gerais) from similarities and differences, in a continuous effort to classify the three states within Brazil.
