Franciscan and Catechist Nuns: between rigidity and the Franciscan charism (SC, 1935-1965)

Keywords: memory, identity, school culture, school space

Abstract

This paper talks about memories of five catechist nuns and discusses how the daily constructions of a teaching practice were articulated with the Franciscan charism in the elementary schools in the State of Santa Catarina (1935-1965). We discussed how these teachers built a school culture inside and outside of the school walls. As a theoretical and methodological course, we use oral history, with collective memory being the main analysis category. The nun’s memories show that there was rigidity with similar characteristics to the precepts of Catholic morality, but there was also the Franciscan charism, building a professional and religious identity inside and outside the school spaces.
