Abstract

Interview conducted on January 31, 2025, at the National University of Distance Education (UNED) with Professor Ana Badanelli Rubio, faculty member at UNED and director of the MANES Research Center.

The conversation addressed key topics related to textbook studies (manualística), highlighting its differences from documentary historical research and the criteria used by MANES to categorize school books. The discussion covered the analysis of images in textbooks, their methodological particularities, and the importance of historical contextualization in iconographic interpretation.

Badanelli reflected on the challenges of reading and decoding images, as well as the evolution of studies in the history of education in Spain. Additionally, she discussed the MANES research agenda in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, and recommended essential references for those beginning research on schoolbooks and images.
