Abstract

The work analyses the process of formation, selection and hiring public teachers, in the province of Minas (1830-1880), trying to comprehend the institutionalization of the schooling education through the nineteenth century. The primary sources analysed were the documents of candidates selection to teaching such as exams, baptism, wedding, suitable precedent certificates and authority letters. The teaching profissionalization meant the progressive conformation of a group of knowledge related to the teaching work, transmitted inside the teachers preparatory schools (escolas normais) formed in these period when a bureaucratic system of teacher’s professional and private life control was established, which was seen as an agent of the State. These system was able to spread, through the model to be followed, the civilized behavior patterns, related to the present public order.
