Abstract

The paper reports on the investigation of the process of change of the conceptions and practice of disciplines and the students’ and teachers’ behaviors based on the supposition that these changes occurred towards the civilization of costumes, as proposed by Norbert Elias. The object of this investigation was the elementary public school organization in Brazil during the first one hundred years of its regulation that is, between 1827 and 1927, first focused on the province and later on Minas Gerais State. My hypothesis is that historically, there was an important effort to change the student-teacher relations, or even to overcome violent actions at school, particularly the changes in the adultchild interdependence dynamics. Therefore, this study focuses on intergenerational relations.
