Abstract

For the Brazilian intelligentsia, during the second half of the XIX century, who were the most admired thinkers? The numerous references to Célestin Hippeau, gave rise to the need of better studying his trajectory. From 1870, Hippeau starts editing a series of volumes on teaching in different countries. His objective was to make known in France the organization of the public instruction in different countries. He also wanted to make possible for other nations to “introduce innovations in their public education system and to set up changes already thought by excellent minds”. He analyses what was considered important and necessary to be a part of the public education system in the XIX century: a system that should focus on progress, under the view of an ideal world-optimistic and triumphant, which expressed educational modernity and a liberal project of education.
