Abstract

This work analizes the programs of study of the public elementary schools during the time when Paraná was a province, using as its main source the reports of the Presidents of the Province and of the General Inspectors of Public Instruction. Once disassociated from São Paulo, the Province of Paraná sought to establish a political and administrative identity. The President of the Province identified as a priority of the government the creation of a uniform educational system. This objective would to be achieved through the adoption of a unique program of studies that was oriented to the development of the individual, and included the cultivation of the values promoted by the State. The result was an educational system that was based on the principles of Christian morals, that is, on the doctrine of the Catholic religion.
