Abstract

The goal of this research was to understand the roles of the teaching occupation and the teacher’s specific abilities in the first half of the nineteenth century, a moment when the public elementary schooling of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, was being organized. In the analyzed period deep arguments on the organization of elementary school system took place. Concepts were produced about the need to organize the public schooling and the teachers formation, as well as the creation of a “Escola Normal” (‘Normal’ refers to the function of defining procedures; this institution is responsible for the teachers formation) where the teachers would be trained.
