Abstract

Developments within the policy of the democratization of education during the early Republic are discussed, by describing the history of the Rural Mixed-Gender School in the Felipão district near Campinas, Brazil, between 1920 and 1960.  The theme is high important in spite of the poor visibility that this form of public primary school had on educational historiographical production when compared to other schools. Research is based on the selection and analysis of photo and documental sources, mainly on written and oral history through interviews with former students and teachers. Their narrative, interpreted by school culture, revealed ambiguities in the process, since duality of different school models within the rural and urban contexts caused educational inequality.
