Abstract

An analysis on the Colégio Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Bento Gonçalves RS Brazil is provided between 1956, the year of the establishment of the college, and 1972, when LDB 5.692/1971 was implemented. Current research contributes towards the history of educational institutions through an investigation of school culture and the college´s identity process. Methodology comprised written records, photographs and the oral history of alumni, former teachers and local residents. Results showed that the college´s identity stance comprised a predominance of Italian ethnicity, changes in pedagogical work and in its physical structure, and Catholic teaching foregrounding teaching practices.
