Abstract

Violence in the environment of public schools in Maringá city (state of Paraná, Brazil) is discussed in the current article focusing the teacher-pupil relationship. Based on bibliographical research and on field research data in two state schools of the above mentioned city, the degree of violence is evaluated with special attention to its perception by teachers and pupils. It has been verified that, in spite of what is constantly broadcasted by the news media, most violence in such relationship is not related to morbidity, but to extremely diverse types of “petty violence” which are increasing quantitatively and qualitatively. This kind of violence mainly consists of lack of respect, threats and verbal aggressions and has caused a heightening of conflicts inherent to the teacher-pupil relationship. As a consequence, the teaching-learning process actually becomes difficult and may herald the development of more serious types of violence
