Look at the other one, see yourself: a Brazilian primary teacher in the “Old world” (1890-1892)

This study analyses the report written by the public primary teacher of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Augusto dos Reis, between 1890 and 1892, when he visited the schools and educational institutions in Portugal, Spain, France and Belgium. The report, publicized in 1892 through Imprensa Nacional, constitutes a significant document to the analysis not only of the ideas circulation, institutions and international educational models in Brazil, but, also, to the study of the appropriation and diffusion of those by the teachers of the city of Rio de Janeiro, considered in this paper as culture mediators. The approach used privileged the examination of the representations built about the educational law, schools and institutions visited, teaching work conditions and pedagogical practices observed in the Portuguese cities of Lisboa and Porto.
