Books for the carioca elementary school in the Nineteenth century: production, circulation and adoption of teacher’s school texts
Abstract
In this article we present some results of the research about the production, approval and adoption of books for the use of the carioca elementary public schools in the second half of the Nineteenth century. In the analysis we privileged, especially, the elementary teachers’ actuation as authors and/or texts translators. We support the hypothesis that these teachers, men and women, stood out because of their actuation as city and teaching intellectuals. Intellectuals that, fulfi lling and disputing the author-function, participated in the production of knowledge, texts, materials and school books, interfering in the confi guration of the school culture in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
