Abstract

Current paper provides a discussion on the history of the teaching of Music in Northeastern Brazil. Music teaching is discussedunder three main issues: economic growth of the major cities during the Brazilian Empire; the subservience of the teaching of music to politics in the early years of the Republic in state technological institutes; and the provision of Higher Education in music within the context of the each state. The methodology consists in documentary and bibliographic research, consultation of online information by educational institutions and through public officials by e-mail. Results point to additional laws setting out the commitments that educational managers should take to maintain music educational institutions and guidelines to expand and internalize the vacancies in music courses.
