Teaching of Chemistry Gyms in São Paulo – 1896/1909

Abstract

In the late nineteenth century, Physica / Chimica discipline was incorporated into the secondary school curriculum of São Paulo schools in a process marked by discussion of its purpose: the classical training or training to practice. In this text a study on the process of organizing this discipline from the analysis of legislation and of textbooks. Also we analyse the choices made in the Gymnasium of Campinas between 1896 and 1909 considering the construction process of teaching laboratories, acquisition of objects for education in chemistry and the evidence of the practices present in the school assessments. With this text on the history of science education, we hope to contribute to the understanding of school practices and demonstrate that prevailed during this period a teaching of theoretical chemistry and encyclopaedic.
