Abstract

A mathematical model was developed which correlates the voltage (V) applied to the electric heater in function of the flow rate ( ), the air temperature at the entrance (Te) and the desired air temperature at the exit (Ts) from an energy balance in the heater, taking into account possible heat dissipations due to natural convection. The model has two parameters: the electric resistance (R) and the heat transfer coefficient for natural convection (h). From this model, a user-friendly simulator was developed that contemplates two distinct situations: significant heat dissipations trough the wall of the heater (complete model, h ≠ 0) and insignificant ones (simplified model, h = 0). It was verified that the complete model represented heater behavior in the range of operational conditions experimented without any parameters adjustment, indicating that the heat dissipations by natural convection are significant
