DEIA/IDEIA Principles

The editorial policy of the Acta Scientiarum. Education Journal adheres to the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) in national and international scientific production and publication. Echoing the relevance of Scielo's role in promoting periodical scientific publication, the journal also considers Impact, aggregated and advocated in the motto “Science with IDEIA”. In 2023, the Open Science document with IDEIA Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility was produced by the SciELO Network, which presents the development of scientific knowledge, understanding that its evolution collaborates with society and with public educational policies.

In line with global trends and the movement undertaken by the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC Brasil), the Journal's editorial board is committed to the Guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER), as well as complying with the guidelines of the Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC), which aims to work with organizations or individuals to build equity, inclusion, diversity, and accessibility in academic communications. In defense of the plurality and diversity of scientific work, the Journal encourages its authors and reviewers to adopt these guidelines. The Journal also keeps the reviewer database updated to ensure that submissions related to these topics are evaluated by researchers specialized in the area.

With these strategies, we strive to comply with ethical principles in scientific production and to combat and overcome any type of prejudice in the field of science, seeking innovation without renouncing the criteria of academic excellence.

Garcia (2022), in her discussions on the relevance of DEIA, highlights the recognition of these principles in scientific publications. Furthermore, the researcher highlights that:

Representing, including, and reducing inequalities in science – whether gender, race or ethnicity, geographic origin, age or career stage, presence of disabilities, etc. – is essential for the functioning of science itself (Garcia, 2022).

In addition to the DEIA principles, the Journal acts to consider the SAGER guidelines in the routines of evaluating and publishing articles. According to Heidari et al. (2017), SAGER is a procedure that describes information about gender and sex in data analysis, study designs, results, and interpretation of findings, specifically regarding the preparation of articles submitted for evaluation.

Furthermore, Acta Scientiarum. Education, as of 2025, will take gender proportionality into account in the composition of its editorial board and the list of reviewers who issue opinions on submitted articles. This action, initially aimed at expanding the editorial board, is based, in addition to academic excellence, on the regional inclusion of editors and advisors. Equally important is the commitment to collecting, analyzing, and publishing data regarding the regional inclusion and gender of reviewers. These actions and information are relevant to support strategies that make the journal more inclusive and diverse.

We also highlight that the journal's editorial guideline and norm is to provide opportunities to promote the principles of DEIA and SAGER guidelines. To this end, the journal allocates at least 20% of its publications to articles on topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Percentage of articles published between 2022 and 2024 in the Journal that converge with the DEIA principles:

  • In 2022, 14 articles published had themes related to the principles of DEIA, addressing: a) education, whether rural, children, youth and adult, feminist and for all; b) the internationalization of Brazil; c) teacher training in relation to gender, sexuality and ethnic-racial issues; d) human rights. Thus, 34.14% of the articles are related to DEIA;
  • In 2023, this occurred in seven published articles, which deal with topics related to education, school management, cultural curriculum, art in the aesthetic formation of the social being, high abilities/giftedness, intellectual disability, and education in the countryside. Thus, 13.46% of the articles are related to DEIA;
  • In 2024, 14 published articles had themes related to antifascism, freedom of expression, gender ideology, democratic culture, shelter, the fascistization of childhood, poor children, identity construction in the French dictatorship, Youth and Adult Education, educational strategies, schooling and pregnancy, totaling 27.45% of articles related to DEIA.
